Overview of job

What we need

We are looking for a Senior Backend Platform Engineer to join our Cloud Tool and Application Team within our Software Engineering organization. Your job will be to design, build, and operate secure, scalable backend services, cloud platforms, and operational tooling that support warehouse automation, digital twin systems, simulation environments, and robotics operations. You will work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to deliver reliable cloud infrastructure and backend systems that power Symbotic's next-generation automation platform.

What we do

The Cloud Tool and Application Team is part of the Software Engineering organization, which is responsible for building the software platforms, tools, and services that power Symbotic's industry-leading warehouse automation solutions. Our team develops cloud-native applications, monitoring platforms, digital twin technologies, simulation systems, and operational tools that enable real-time visibility, diagnostics, fleet management, and business-critical engineering workflows across our robotics ecosystem.

What you’ll do

  • Design, develop, and operate secure, scalable backend services, APIs, and cloud applications that support our cloud-based digital twin and simulation systems.
  • Implement backend APIs, data services, and real-time processing pipelines to ingest, process, and serve robotics, simulation, and operational data from multiple sources.
  • Build and maintain event-driven and job-oriented backend workflows using technologies such as Google Pub/Sub, Redis, WebSockets, and queue-based processing systems.
  • Support simulation orchestration and cloud execution platforms running on Google Cloud services such as Cloud Batch, GKE, Cloud Run, and Cloud Storage.
  • Manage and optimize cloud infrastructure, including compute, storage, networking, deployment pipelines, monitoring, logging, and security configurations.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Google Cloud Build, and container-based deployment workflows to improve deployment reliability, development velocity, environment consistency, and production readiness.
  • Implement infrastructure-as-code practices using Terraform and related automation to support repeatable, auditable, and scalable cloud operations.
  • Monitor system health, performance, reliability, cost, and security posture; proactively identify risks and implement improvements.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, robotics engineers, data engineers, QA engineers, data scientists, and product stakeholders to ensure backend and cloud systems meet business and technical requirements.
  • Support the deployment and operation of simulation and digital twin workloads across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for backend services, cloud architecture, deployment processes, operational runbooks, and system configurations.
  • Stay up to date with modern cloud, DevOps, backend, security, observability, and data infrastructure technologies.
  • Support AI-powered, data-driven, and agentic enterprise workflows by designing and maintaining reliable backend services, cloud infrastructure, and integration platforms.
  • Perform other related duties as reasonably assigned by the direct manager or the Employer.

Our Benefits

  • Comprehensive Health & Insurance: Social insurance, annual health checkups, full insurance coverage during probation, and private health insurance extending to up to 3 family members.
  • Competitive Compensation: 13th-month salary and performance-driven team perks.
  • Work-Life Balance & Flexibility: 15 days of paid annual leave, flexible check-in hours, and 1 remote working day per week.
  • Workplace & Equipment: High-spec work laptop, premium coffee, and daily snacks provided.
  • Team Culture: Company trips, weekly team bonding activities, and regular social events.

Job Requirement

  • 5+ years of professional experience in backend development, DevOps, cloud engineering, platform engineering, or related software engineering roles.
  • Strong backend development experience with Node.js and comfort working in TypeScript-heavy or shared monorepo environments. Experience with Python or .NET is a plus, but not required.
  • Solid experience designing and building scalable backend services, APIs, data processing services, and distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, especially services such as Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Batch, Pub/Sub, Cloud Build, Cloud Storage, IAM, Secret Manager, and Cloud Logging/Monitoring. Experience with AWS or other major cloud platforms is also preferred.
  • Experience managing cloud infrastructure, including compute, storage, networking, IAM, security, monitoring, logging, and cost optimization.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, containerization, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience with Docker, and preferably orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes or cloud-managed container services.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or similar technologies.
  • Experience with data pipelines, event-driven systems, and real-time data streams.
  • Experience with databases and data platforms such as MongoDB, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, or similar systems.
  • Experience with messaging and streaming technologies such as Google Pub/Sub, Redis pub/sub, NATS, BullMQ, Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar platforms.
  • Good understanding of system reliability, scalability, security, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Familiarity with cloud security best practices, including access control, secrets management, network security, and secure deployment processes.
  • Plus: Experience with robotics, simulation, digital twin platforms, warehouse automation, IoT, or high-volume telemetry systems.
  • Plus: Experience supporting AI/ML-powered backend systems or data platforms.
  • Plus: Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, or similar tools.
  • Good teamwork, communication, time management, ownership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Working proficiency in verbal and written English, with the ability to communicate independently in an international environment and clearly present technical concepts, findings, risks, and recommendations to leadership stakeholders.
